Programming and reflections on bias.

You know, not a lot happens when I program. I guess most of the day just kind of melts away. This morning, I spoke a little bit with Katherine about the idea of bias against the African way of living. Most people, at least from those who consider themselves to be from more developed countries, have this internalized bias about how Africa is. And that perspective that they take, usually, more often than not, negatively effects the true authentic African way of living.
Honestly, I don't think it's a third world country. Sure there are many international standards that designate it as such, but the people I've met so far, and I acknowledge that this is purely anecdotal, are some of the most intelligent and hardworking people I've ever met.
You take a person from Africa and drop them in America, they will easily adapt. Take a person from America and drop them in Africa, they will die in a week. That's the difference between the two.
Also, the type of character that you develop in places like Malawi for example is one that I resonate with more. As an orphan, you have to be resourceful, you have to be smart, you have to be able to think on your feet. You have to be able to adapt to any situation. You have to be able to survive. And that's what I like about the people here. They are survivors. They are fighters. People here, they make the most of their situation.
Sure sometimes the situation may literally and figuratively be falling apart, but sometimes when there's nothing that you can do and you can't do anything about it, you just do what you can.
